|CD REVIEW ZZ Top|
Band : ZZ Top
The recordings for this album took place in 1980, when ZZ Top performed at the Grugahalle in Essen for the German TV series Rock Palazt. I hadn’t seen the original broadcast of this gig, but a few years later I was able to look at it when some of those gigs were rebroadcasted by the German television.
For fans of ZZ Top like me, it’s pleasant to hear these songs again, since this was before the Eliminator period when ZZ Top got known over the whole world with their hit singles. This material is more rock with a very high dose of blues poured over, as a matter of fact the original style ZZ played in. It’s sad the album only contains 16 songs, as there are many more good tunes ZZ has cranked out, but it must be said it contains some of their best old style songs like “Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers”, “Tush”, “Jesus just left Chicago”, to name but a few, and it also features their cover of Elvis’ ”Jailhouse Rock”.
The booklet that goes with the CD is rather on the small side. I would have preferred had they included one with more pictures from those past and gone days. But it’s great to know that these guys, after that many years together, still are active, and are regularly touring.
