Band : Rituals Of The Oak
Can we class this as an album or an EP? Who knows, we have 5 tracks that gives us 37 minutes of thought out, atmospheric mood music. Rituals of the Oak are a band from Sydney, Australia, who have been put in the same realms of Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus and Warning. Personally ROTO are nowhere near the talents of the above mentioned bands.
Some of the material sees female Sabine straining in the vocal department which kills some of the melodies like in "Serpentine tongues"and "Here". I believe that if the voice was a little different (read-consistent), the whole work would be much better. So, the main con is the voice. Proceeding to the music, I must say that is quite interesting but after a while it repeats itself and gets boring...These tracks don’t have enough power or enough killer moments to keep you interested. From the beginning of the album I listen to a band which has musical skills, a proper production and understands what sounds good or not but somehow can’t bring all these together to make a good album. Maybe it's just a matter of time before we come to taste the doom, but for now it's Your songs are ok, you are good players and you’ve done a pretty good work. But if you want to make the big step, you have to serve us something different than just some usual riffs.
A disc for the fans who love this style of doom metal but still very predictable.
