This gets frightening, you know? The sheer number of heavy psych rock bands coming from Germany and also the quality of most of them! Orcus Chylde is another one to reach my ears, and even though I have heard a lot in this style, I must say that I like their debut a lot!
Like most bands of this genre, Orcus Chylde, too, do not use anything that we have not heard before, but these six folks have a hand for atmosphere, dynamics, melodies and that, which is pretty impressive at this early stage of their career. My mind had a hard time distinguishing the vocals whether or not I thought them to be female or male and so naturally I had to give some songs more than one listen to make what I believed to be an accurate decision. Eventually the vocals, which are male, grew on me and began to intermingle with the other various elements on this album that I find intriguing. This album emits dark and doom vibes of Anathema, Agalloch, Witchcraft, Blood Ceremony and Jex Thoth crossed with a vintage 70s Hammond sound. Though the songs remain in the slow to mid-tempo range, it never becomes a problem, as it adds to the deep feeling atmosphere. Songs are allowed to breathe, letting the listener to fully sink their teeth into every track.
