Woods of Ypres was formed somewhere in 2002 and signed a record deal with Earache Records in 2010. Their label debut called ‘Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light’. The record was to be released on Jan. 31, 2012. Prior to the Earache release, the band put out a demo and three full lengths independently. The band also toured North America this summer, further generating buzz for their upcoming release.
Unfortunately the future of this doom rock band is uncertain. David Gold, the front man for this Canadian band, has died at the age of 31. Gold was killed in a car accident somewhere in December. Luckily friends and family wanted the band to release the record as a tribute to David.
This record can best be described as melodic and sad then pure doom rock. You can definitely hear that it has a big melancholic sound as well as the vocals. And yes I have to admit that it has a certain vibe that I actually like. But the downside for this one is the fact that it is rather simplistic music. Ok it doesn’t have to be technical to be a good record but on most of the songs you get the feeling that they could have done more. So its not a bad record but also not the best.
