CD REVIEW Grave Digger

Band : Grave Digger
Album title : Home At Last
Label : Napalm Records
Distributor : Rough Trade Belgium – Tone Entertainment
Release date : 27/07/2012
Release : CD

This mini CD contains six tracks, 3 of them were recorded live at Wacken 2010, and the other three are studio songs.  The opening track can also be found on Grave Digger’s next full album Clash Of The Gods, and the third studio track ”Metal Will Never Die” was previously unreleased on CD I think.

Although Grave Digger will never really be one of my preferred bands, they have done a good job with this album.

After their albums around Scottish history, this new Grave Digger  album has Greek mythology as theme, resulting in songs like “Charon” or “Medusa”.

It is a typical Grave Digger, full of scorching riffs, and with a rhythm section that is unbelievable fast, yet precise. Of course you have to take for granted that like most German vocalists Chris Boltendahl’s English is not flawless, but I’ve heard worse. Compared to previous Grave Digger albums the keyboards are a bit more prominent, but nevertheless the overall sound this band produces still harks back memories of the eighties, with a modern twist to it.

For fans of ‘old style’ German heavy metal I suppose, personally I think the album has some good songs, but I’ve never been a fan of Krautrock, except for a few bands that is.
